Chapter 28: Good things should be hidden

The night was getting darker, and Gu Fei fell asleep unconsciously while reading a book.

Mrs. Chen has been waiting for Gu Zhang in the main room.

At midnight, Gu Zhang came back home.

“You damn old man, you didn’t tell me where you were!” Mrs. Chen cursed.

Gu Zhang waved his hand: “Let’s talk about it tomorrow. Tomorrow, our daughter, Dalang, and I will go into the city, so let’s rest first.”

The old couple and Gu Fei were lying on the same bed.

As soon as the rooster crows, Mrs. Chen gets up. She has to quickly prepare breakfast for her husband and children to eat before heading into the city.

After entering the kitchen, Li Chunhua was already there.

She was squatting on the ground holding an oil lamp in a daze.

Mrs. Chen followed her gaze and looked over. There were two big bags on the ground. The material of the bags was something she had never seen before. There were writings on them, but Mrs. Chen was illiterate and didn’t know what was written.

She walked over and looked at it doubtfully. Just as she was about to cut it open with a knife, Li Chunhua suddenly shouted: “Mother, be careful, I touched it. It seemed to be grains.”

Grains?

Two big bags of grains?

Mrs. Chen’s eyes brightly shined. She carefully untied the string at the mouth of the bag. When she opened it, she saw that there were white grains inside!

Mrs. Chen and Li Chunhua looked at each other, and both of them were shocked.

They also opened the other bag, which was full of white flour.

Mrs. Chen stretched out her hand and grabbed a handful. It was white and finely grinned.

After a long while, Mrs. Chen said trembling: “Chunhua, you can’t talk to anyone except our family about this matter.”

Li Chunhua nodded vigorously, “Mother, I won’t tell anyone else.”

“You can’t even talk to your maternal family! Remember!”

“I won’t tell, I won’t tell anyone. Don’t worry, Mother, I know the severity.” Li Chunhua grabbed Mrs. Chen’s hand, “Mother, I think this must have been given to us by the fairy when she saw that our family had no food to eat. Don’t you agree?”

Mrs. Chen nodded: “Yes, Xiao Cao said there is a little fairy.”

The two of them knew tacitly that these things, like the fruit last night, they knew it had something to do with Gu Fei.

Mrs. Chen looked around and said, “This has to be hidden.”

Li Chunhua came up with an idea: “Mom, I’m afraid we have to hide in the room. Many people enter this kitchen.”

“Yes, yes, yes, hide this flour in your room, and I’ll hide the rice in our room.”

The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law hid the flour and rice, then scooped up a large bowl of flour to make breakfast.

In the kitchen, Li Chunhua whispered again, “Mom, look what is this?”

There was a transparent bag on the chopping board, and the contents inside were all white.

“Is this salt?” Mrs. Chen opened the bag, dipped a little on her finger, and put it in her mouth.

So sweet!

“Chunhua, it’s sugar, try it!”

Li Chunhua also dipped some in it and put it in her mouth. It was really sweet.

“Why is this sugar so white?”

At this time, the sugar consumed by every household was brown sugar. White sugar was already available, but it was expensive, and ordinary people were reluctant to eat it.

Mrs. Chen hesitated for a moment and said: “Bring some eggs and let’s make pancakes in the morning. Also, add some sugar.”

Li Chunhua quickly took the eggs and started kneading the flour.

When Gu Fei got up, there was no one in the room.

She took off her clothes and put on the apricot-yellow and green jacket and skirt her father had bought for her. There was nothing she could do about her hair. It was painful for her to comb it herself.

After changing her clothes, Gu Fei took the toothpaste and toothbrush from the space and went to the kitchen to get water with disheveled her hair.

Now that there was a drought, the water in the wells was almost drying up, and only one or two buckets of turbid muddy water could be fetched a day.

When Li Chunhua saw her coming in, she said hurriedly: “Sister, do you want some water to wash your face? Don’t move, I’ll bring it for you.”

“Thank you, sister-in-law.” Gu Fei smiled sweetly. Especially, when she smelled the scent of the dough.
