Chapter 81: Merit Evaluation (Part 1)

Three days later, the dust of the Nan Province incident settled and Gu Zhisang and others were finally able to leave the area.

She didn’t buy a return ticket this time. After checking out of the hotel room, she took advantage of the night and walked into the narrow alley.

An old lady on this road was selling roasted sweet potatoes and roasted corn with a cart. When she saw a lady with a slender back walking into the alley, she reminded her:

“Miss, that’s a dead end. It’s covered with cement walls!”

After calling out, the lady still didn’t stop, so the old lady turned her head and looked into the dead end.

This sight completely stunned her.

With the lights on the roadside at night, the interior of a narrow dead-end street was illuminated so that she could see to the end.

Except for some garbage and fallen leaves on the ground in the alley, there was no one else. The lady who just walked in just disappeared out of thin air!

The old lady trembled all over. She was sure that she was not dazzled to this extent.

Could it be that… I’ve seen a ghost?!

Gu Zhisang, who walked into the gate of hell, didn’t know that she had scared an old lady.

She stepped through the gate, ignoring the evil spirits crawling out and trying to drag her.

Any ghostly hand that came close to her legs and feet would bounce away like a burning electric shock, and then dissipate with a whimper full of resentment.

As soon as Gu Zhisang stepped into the gate of hell, she alerted the Yin Envoy, Ma Mian who was on duty, as well as the large number of ghosts wandering around the Naihe Bridge, and the dense gray mist rushed towards her.

She stopped in her tracks when she saw many brightly-colored banners and headbands mixed in the ghost mist, which looked particularly eye-catching.

These were the tokens of support that the ghost fans in the underworld asked living relatives and friends in the upper world to burn for them during the last time they shared a dream with them. They asked for printed photos of Gu Zhisang and cartoon images drawn by fans in the upper world.

Since Gu Zhisang came to this world, she has never been into many printed photos. Even her fan, Mulberry Leaf, only owns a few.

The ghost fans can only follow weekly programs and live broadcasts, capture Gu Zhisang’s slight smile and profile, and then copy and paste them into cheering objects.

“Sangsang, look here. We like you very much. We have ranked you as the #1 most popular idol in the underworld. We’ve broken the records for the third time!”

“Thank you for your hard work. I am willing to be your licking ghost forever!”

Among the chatter, Gu Zhisang asked: “How did you know I would come?”

A ghost fan said nonchalantly: “In the past 2 days, more and more souls have entered the gate of hell who have solved the knots in their hearts. Only then did we know that a Yin Envoy actually cracked the help-seeker’s request, and even found all the dens of the human traffickers. This matter is also closely related to the underworld, so you will come here.”

“Yes, I have been squatting at the gate of hell for the past 2 days. I am lucky enough to encounter you.”

“I am a new ghost who died after being abducted. Sangsang, look at me!! I am also involved in the incident you solved. Thank you very much for helping us find the root cause and let us come here. We, lonely ghosts, will be grateful to you for the rest of our lives and the next life!”

“……”

The ghosts who died on the road of abduction or died in a foreign land often have resentment and confusion due to problems such as no graves and tombs, and do not know where their home and roots were. They become lonely ghosts floating in the world.

They don’t receive offerings, so they don’t have very powerful abilities.

They will either lose their sanity and harm others, or it becomes weaker and weaker over the long years, and in the end, completely dissipates between heaven and earth.

After the abduction case was solved, the Southern Provincial Police Department sorted out the identity information of most people and started notifying relatives and conducting subsequent searches.

The families of those who have died will also be notified.

In this process, many lonely ghosts wandering in the southern province have found their families and hometowns.

The obsession in their hearts dissipated, and they finally knew where their roots were, and they poured into the underworld in waves.

After arriving in the underworld, they found out that the mystic master who solved the case in the underworld was still a top figure in the underworld.

So they all jumped into the pit and became a new batch of Gu Zhisang’s ghost fans out of gratitude.

Seeing the gray shadows spread out like a river around her, and knowing that they had all been squatting at the gate of hell for dozens of hours, Gu Zhisang felt a little moved.

“Thank you for liking me.”

A ghost fan who was pulling for support said: “Everyone, please stop crowding. The Yin Envoy must have something important to do.”

This was indeed the case.

Gu Zhisang came to meet the King of Hell this time.

After the ghost mist dispersed, there was still a mist of ghosts behind her when she headed to the main hall.

The one on duty in the palace today was none other than the King of the Tenth Palace of Hell: Jiang Ziwen.

He was in charge of the “Ghost Judgment Hall”, which was responsible for registering the dead in the human world and extraditing super beings.

After being received into the palace, Gu Zhisang took out a white jade bottle from her pocket.

After opening the bottle, the transparent remnant souls inside floated out, shivering in fear from the gloomy ghostly atmosphere around it.

Above the main hall, King Jiang Ziwen’s eyes narrowed: “What are these?”

Gu Zhisang explained: “These souls were all trafficked during their lifetimes. They should all have some luck and destiny. They were brutally deprived of life and died by poisonous hands. After death, their souls were severely damaged, so they couldn’t be reincarnated or recognize their previous identities.”

“So I can only collect them and see if there is anything the underworld can do.”

King Jiang Ziwen frowned, feeling troubled.

After thinking for a moment, he said: “It is an innocent disaster after all. In this case, I will take it to the ‘Soul-nurturing Pond’ for 3 days to cultivate. If they are lucky enough to replenish their souls, it is considered their luck. If their souls are still incomplete, I have no other way.”

The ‘Soul-nurturing Pond’ was a spiritual pond located on the edge of the Yin River. It can nourish the soul and gather spiritual energy. Only those with great merit can enter it to repair the soul and body.

King Jiang Ziwen called out, and immediately a black robed with a long hat man appeared in the hall. It was the black impermanence, Fan Wujiu.

Fan Wujiu glanced at Gu Zhisang and suddenly snorted:

“You like to be nosy. I reminded you before, just mind the ghosts in the underworld. Don’t get too involved in the worldly affairs, so as not to be infected with the cause and effect.”

After finishing speaking, he used soul locks to hook a group of frightened remnant souls before they could escape.

The solemn King Jiang Ziwen, who was sitting in a towering chair above the main hall, lowered his eyes and looked at the upright Gu Zhisang in the center of the main hall.

Just as Fan Wujiu said.

This Taoist Master, who has a calm face and a strong spirit, has a very strong power of cause and effect.

According to the laws of heaven and earth, people cannot be resurrected after death. There was a natural separation between yin and yang.

It was inevitable for ghosts to stay in the human world and come into contact with living people.

Slaying demons and extraditing ghosts will lead to a reversal of fortunes and changes in the fate of living people, and will not be affected by cause and effect.

Many of the cases Gu Zhisang handled in the show before had evil spirits behind them.

But this case was different. The biggest driving forces behind it were all profit-driven humans, without any evil intentions at all.

  1. “… were all profit-driven humans, without any evil intentions at all.”
How were these not due to evil intentions? Kidnapping and murdering and destroying the souls due to selfish reasons are not evil?

      1. I’m guessing the “profit-driven humans” refer to the villagers involved with trafficking for the sake of money rather than participating with “evil intentions” directed at the victims themselves (as opposed to the metaphysics masters who trafficked people for evil purposes such as unethical cultivation practice, human sacrifice, or human experimentation). Either way, though, it seems pretty evil to me to be involved with trafficking regardless of whether the underlying purpose is money or ill intentions.
