Chapter 85: Goddess Lake Festival (Part 1)

Seeing the helplessness and seriousness on Gi Liaochan’s face, Gu Zhisang raised an eyebrow and said:

“Then let’s go take a look first. Anyway, that’s why I came to Hunan Province.”

Gi Liaochan: “Okay.”

After joining the Special Spiritual Department and becoming a ‘special member’, Gu Zhisang had the right to view some confidential documents.

By looking through the archives of the Special Spiritual Department in the past and recent years, she discovered that the authorities had long been collecting and processing metaphysical and supernatural events from various places.

Most information and events that do not involve extreme privacy will be uploaded by the headquarters to the official program developed specifically for the Special Spiritual Department.

Only those who have passed the Special Spiritual Department assessment and become an official member can enter this program.

As a member, she can view the metaphysical incidents that have been solved in the past, communicate with each other for help, or conduct research and guidance on metaphysics.

In addition, the most important function of this small program was the ‘tasks’.

Under normal circumstances, when police stations in various places receive a report of a crime and dispatch the police, if there was an incident that was vile and cruel, the suspect disappears out of thin air, or has a strange color, etc., there will be a Special Spiritual Department member in the police team. Members will follow and be responsible for observing whether there are supernatural means in such cases.

If some unresolved cases are encountered, the local Special Spiritual Department will upload them to the program to offer rewards and sincerely invite mystic masters from all over the world to solve them.

After completion, the mystic master who accepts the ‘tasks’ can receive a generous reward, as well as various magical tools and talismans that were beneficial to Taoism.

The reason why Gu Zhisang came to Hunan Province was because she saw a reward rated as “dangerous” on the task program.

During this time, her role in “The Legend of the Floating Sea” was just about to be completed. In addition, she and her agency “Chengen Entertainment” disliked each other. The other party secretly used some unflattering tricks to accept all the invitations on her behalf. She was happy and relaxed after turning it down and freeing up a lot of time.

Out of curiosity about the case, she took over the reward.

This case was called “The Case of the Corpse Sinking in Goddess Lake”.

Before Gu Zhisang, two former clients had accepted the case and went to Goddess Lake in Hunan Province to resolve the incident.

It was a pity that they all failed.

After clicking on the case, Gu Zhisang looked at the general introduction.

Four days ago, a group of local children ignored the advice of adults and ignored the warning signs on the shore. They insisted on gathering during the weekend and went swimming in a nearby large lake.

That lake was called ‘Goddess Lake’. It was the largest and most famous freshwater lake in the area. The depth of the lake was more than tens of meters. People nearby will fish and catch shrimp in it.

The shallow water area near the shore was not very deep, but there were so many people living in the lake that got into trouble, so the local government and people were unwilling to let children play in the water here.

But on that day, something happened to a group of children playing in the water.

A boy who was competing with his companions went under the water and never came out.

The other children did not realize the seriousness of the matter at first. When they emerged from the water one after another, after being unable to hold their breath, they were still laughing and shouting “Come on”.

Until the second-to-the-last boy finally couldn’t hold his breath anymore and emerged from the water with a blushing face, the other children were all in admiration for the last boy.

One of them shouted: ‘Alright, alright, everyone can’t hold it in anymore, you can come out now. I know you are awesome, so we will accept you as our big brother for a day and do as you say!’

‘I can’t believe it. When do you become so good? Did you secretly practice holding your breath in the water tank at home?’

The friends shouted at the top of their lungs several times, asking the child to stop holding it in, but they received no response.

Only then did they gradually realize something was wrong.

Someone panicked: ‘What’s going on? Could something have happened to him?’

‘Bah, bah, bah, don’t talk nonsense. The water didn’t even reach our chests. How could something happen? Don’t scare us, come out quickly!’

However, the children’s shouting was never answered.

They groped in the nearby water for several minutes, then plunged under the water. They endured the discomfort and opened their eyes in the turbid lake water, trying to see if there was anyone underwater.

But no trace of the boy was ever found.

More than ten minutes have passed since the boy entered the water to hold his breath.

The remaining children were frightened and swam to the shore one after another. Between telling their parents and adults to be punished, or calling the police to arrest them, the children chose the latter.

The local police station dispatched officers to catch the fish that day but to no avail.

There were no floating corpses on the lake, and no human corpses could be found under the water.

If all the children hadn’t said with certainty that the boy went into the water with them and disappeared into thin air, the police would have suspected whether they were joking.

The boy’s family could not accept this fact and believed that other children had harmed their son, but the others were also innocent.

They all said that it was this drowned and missing companion who first suggested sneaking to the Goddess Lake to play in the water.

When the matter reached this point, it was no longer something that ordinary people could solve.

So the local Special Spiritual Department launched a series of investigations, but to no avail.

The incident spread widely in the neighborhood.

Originally, the area where Goddess Lake was located was a relatively remote and backward city in Hunan Province, where legends such as the ‘River God’ and witchcraft were widely circulated.

Many people believe that there was a “river god” in the Goddess Lake, and even claim that they once saw a huge shadow under the lake when they were driving a boat out of the center of the lake.

For a while, some people said that this child was spotted by the “River God” and was captured to be a sweeper.

Some people also say that he was caught by a water ghost and used as a substitute. It was said that his parents provoked someone outside and were poisoned by ‘river toads’. The body was eaten directly by the fish, shrimp and crabs in the lake…

The floating body was still not recovered the next day, so the local Special Spiritual Department had no choice but to post a “reward” on the program, hoping that after other team members from various places saw it, capable people could help them solve it.

On the same day, a Taoist Master from a neighboring city rushed over and performed a spiritual salvation practice by the river. Many onlookers were watching nearby.

He lit a dozen sticks of incense sticks half as tall as a man in the open space on the shore, and jingled the bell to practice the method.

The sky above the Goddess Lake, which was originally calm and sunny, soon became cloudy and gloomy, and there was a lot of wind and waves on the lake.

In the end, to everyone’s surprise, a big wave of water was poured on the Taoist Master who was doing his work on the shore without any warning, and soaked the incense stick he had set up.

The disgraced Taoist Master was very frustrated and told the local spirit group that he had indeed felt a very powerful force in the lake.

He guessed that the former spiritual creature in the Goddess Lake had gone astray and turned into something evil. He said that he had no control over the matter, so he picked up the magic weapon and left the place that day.

The second Taoist Master who accepted the commission, like Gu Zhisang, came specially from other provinces.

That person was quite famous in the Special Spiritual Department. He was a Taoist Master of the sixth level, and his ability level was considered to be excellent.

When he arrived, he did not perform the ritual immediately. Instead, he asked the local spiritual group for a small boat. He wandered to a stop just above the center of the lake, wandering back and forth on the boat while doing the ritual and chanting the mantra.

Others on the shore saw ripples in the water near the boat under his feet as if something was lingering under his boat.

Then suddenly, he leaned forward, spurted out a mouthful of blood, and fell straight off the boat into the middle of the lake.

  1. I’m guessing a god of some sort, not necessarily an evil one, dwells in the lake, but punishes those who offend it. I just feel sorry for the child that died because he wasn’t aware of it, but he also suffered the consequences of his actions for ignoring the directions of the adults and the warning signs. I just wonder how Gu Zhisang will address the issue.

    Thanks for the chapter! 😀
