Chapter 85: Goddess Lake Festival (Part 2)

This frightened the people on the shore, and they quickly drove a speedboat to fish him out. After rescuing the Taoist Master, he was sent to a local hospital. After examination, the doctor said that his ruptured organs were damaged and his life was in danger.

The second Taoist Master was still lying in the hospital as of this day.

The murderous name of this case spread out immediately, and it was classified as ‘dangerous’ by the Special Spiritual Department. The reward offered was doubled, but no one dared to accept it.

As soon as Gu Zhisang joined the task program, she took over this task.

Rongcheng’s Special Spiritual Department arranged the fastest flight to Hunan Province for her, and asked Gi Liaochan to pick her up.

In the sports car, while driving the steering wheel, Gi Liaochan briefly told Gu Zhisang the latest developments in “The Case of the Corpse Sinking in Goddess Lake”.

Gi Liaochan said: “Originally, things shouldn’t have happened so quickly, but something else happened the night before yesterday. There was an Aunt who lived alone in a county near the Goddess Lake. She didn’t know what happened at night, she saw a woman run to the Goddess Lake and drown.”

“When people nearby found her, one of her shoes was floating on the lake. They also found no floating body. The body disappeared out of thin air.”

Qi Liaochan smiled bitterly as she spoke, and continued: “Maybe it’s because the people sent by the official failed twice and couldn’t find any information. Some residents…may not trust us very much. They didn’t call the police, but invited a very mystic master in the area to come and see it.”

During the conversation, Gu Zhisang learned that the small towns around the Goddess Lake were called the ‘Shen District’ of Hunan Province.

Many people in the small town over there were aborigines who were renovated in the Miao village. There were many ethnic minorities. They still retain the customs of the past and believe in the local legends that have been passed down since ancient times.

There were also local Old Shaman and psychics who were good at reading metaphysics, and they had a high status in the local area.

Gi Liaochan said: “That Old Shaman is awesome. That night, she asked the nearby residents to go to the breeding farm to buy fresh live sheep and chickens. They slaughtered them on the bank and wrapped the livestock carcasses with leaves and tied them with stone and threw it into the goddess lake.”

“I didn’t expect that not long after the sacrifices were put in, the woman’s body emerged! Residents nearby who filmed the video recorded the whole process.”

After the body was recovered, the residents discovered that the woman’s swollen skin was an abnormal purple color, and her face was a mixture of pain and a ferocious smile, which was horrifying to see.

The Old Shaman who did it said that the “river goddess” in the lake was angry.

In recent years, the people on the shore have become less and less religious in worshiping her, and they do not worship her before going out to fish in the lake. Therefore, the angry “River Goddess” brings disasters to the surrounding residents.

Merely using cattle, sheep, and livestock as sacrifices cannot appease the anger of the ‘River Goddess’. It was necessary to follow the ancient method of opening an altar and offering real sacrifices to the ‘River Goddess’.

Otherwise, everyone will not have a good life in the future.

Qi Liaochan and Gu Zhisang complained: “The local people have had the habit of worshiping the ‘River Goddess’ for decades ago, which is to fill the lake with living people. They think this can ensure smooth weather and calm lake conditions every year. These are all ancient people’s beliefs. The bad culture that has been passed down, after the establishment of the Xiang Province Special Spiritual Department, the whole province strictly prohibited the use of human sacrifices, and the punishments were very severe, so this kind of bad metaphysical custom was completely put to an end.”

“That’s what the ‘Goddess River Festival’ that the Old Shaman is talking about now means! Once she sets a precedent and revives this culture, other more ignorant places and people will follow suit.”

Gu Zhisang’s frowned eyebrows furrowed even more when she heard this.

She asked: “What about now?”

Qi Liaochan said: “Yesterday, our people and the forensic doctor took away the body of the woman, and also did some ideological work for the nearby people. They promised to investigate and perform an autopsy first, and they would solve the case as soon as possible. They were strictly prohibited from holding the sacrifice, these people promised well…”

Needless to say, Gu Zhisang also understood what happened next.

Although the nearby residents promised the Special Spiritual Department not to perform the ‘River Sacrifice’, they still carried out the ceremony secretly behind their backs.

As a result, they were discovered by the team members who were squatting nearby, and they quickly informed Gi Liaochan.

The airport was far from the destination.

When Gi Liaochan almost reached their destination, she could see hundreds of people gathered near the edge of the lake.

The white smoke floated upwards and finally dispersed on the lake.

She stopped the car in the open space and quickly got out of the car. By this time, Gu Zhisang could hear the noise and arguments on the shore.

Gi Liaochan shouted: “What are you doing? Yesterday, we said that the ‘River Festival’ is not allowed to be held. Are you going to rebel? Why don’t you let them go!”

She saw a few members of the Special Spiritual Department, who had also rushed over to calm down the agitated residents, were now blocked by a few strong men, staring at them with hostile eyes.

Gu Zhisang asked in a low voice: “Have you called the police?”

Gi Liaochan said: “I just called, it will take about 10 minutes at the fastest before they arrive.”

The reason why other team members did not alert the police station first when they arrived was that they did not expect that these residents would directly disobey the law and did not listen to their dissuasion at all.

At this time, a middle-aged couple with red eyes and resentful expressions came over from the crowd.

The man gritted his teeth pointed at Gi Liaochan and said: “My son is dead. His body is still soaked in the water and cannot be buried. Why don’t you let us worship the ‘River Goddess’?! The Taoist Masters can’t solve this problem. But you people keep telling me to wait and wait!”

The woman also patted her thighs and complained:

“My life is so miserable! My son was killed inexplicably, and now it has become a crime to even fish him out and bury him? My poor son, you should take your parents away with you!”

The surrounding residents also spoke one after another, accusingly:

“Look at you, a young girl, wearing the clothes of our village. Why are you so cruel?”

“Do you know what it means for the River Goddess to show her power? If we don’t appease the River Goddess’s anger, the people around us will suffer!”

“This is our own business, the people by the lake. We don’t need you to meddle in our own business!”

During the quarrel, seeing someone trying to fish in troubled waters and wanting to push Gi Liaochan and vent her anger, Gu Zhisang frowned, stretched out her hand, and pulled Gi Liaochan’s arm back. Avoiding the opponent’s hand.

The man didn’t stand firm and fell along with the inertia. His face and nose hit the ground directly on the huge stone in the sand, and he let out a scream.

“M-my nose!!”

Scarlet blood oozed out from his hand that was covering the bridge of his nose. Seeing the blood, the people around him were shocked and calmed down a little.

When they looked at the shorter and slender girl next to Miao’s descendant again, they were all stunned by her dark and cold eyes.

Gu Zhisang took out a few black and white chess pieces from her arms and threw them out.

The go chess pieces smashed into the sand with a dull sound, immediately making several small craters.

The expressions of the surrounding people changed, and they couldn’t help but take a step back.

With this hand strength, if the go chess piece hits them, even if it doesn’t poke a hole, they will probably suffer some internal injuries!

Watching her walking towards the river, some residents still wanted to stop her, but when they stretched out their hands, they found that they could not touch the hem of the girl’s clothes and could only watch her pass through the crowd.

Gu Zhisang stood still on the river bank, staring at the old woman wearing a strange blue-purple robe and wearing a string of silver bracelets and rings. Her eyes squinted slightly.

The old shaman had a shriveled figure and a stooped back. She held a whisk-like magic weapon in her hand. Behind her were two huge wooden boxes and a few sticks of lit incense.

  1. I’m beginning to wonder if the “goddess of the lake” was made up by metaphysics practitioners of the past to cover some mysterious secret or if it’s just the shaman woman who is evil and wants to use human sacrifices for a ritual unknown by the nearby lake inhabitants.

    Thanks for the chapter! 😀
