Chapter 86: Hidden Hero (Part 1)

A few minutes later, Gu Zhisang opened the door to the room, looked at the police officers and Gi Liaochan outside the door, and said:

“She has something to explain. Do you want to come in and take notes?”

The police officers looked surprised, and one of them nodded and said: “Miss Gu and I will go in.”

There was recording and monitoring equipment in the room, and other police officers went to the observation room to turn on the equipment and watch everything happening in the room from the surveillance screen.

After the police officer, Gi Liaochan entered the door, what he saw was Gu Zhisang sitting calmly.

The suspect woman opposite looked dazed and still had tears in her eyes as if she had suffered a heavy blow and her whole body had been drained of energy.

After the two sat down, Gu Zhisang’s voice continued:

“The reason why I am sure that you have encountered a supernatural event is because I can see that your fate is contaminated with yin energy, and it is gray floating on your face, but I can’t see the specific cause and effect. This shows that what you encountered was not an ordinary evil spirit, and you’re not just being infected with evil spirits.”

“If I don’t know the cause and effect, I can’t see the whole picture, let alone help you solve your problems. So you still don’t want to confess frankly?”

The police officer and Gi Liaochan looked at each other, both surprised.

Judging from what Gu Zhisang said, this suspect woman was not only involved in buying children to sacrifice in the Goddess Lake but also possibly carrying some other crimes on her own?!

The woman looked pained, and after a while, she choked and said: “Okay… I’ll tell you everything.”

The woman knew that Gu Zhisang was forcing herself and just making excuses, but instead of being punished by the law, she was now more afraid of ghosts demanding her life and that her family would be implicated.

For so many years, she had been having trouble sleeping and eating and was worried about her past mistakes.

Making up her mind and telling the truth made her feel relieved.

The woman’s name was Yao Mingfang. As Gu Zhisang saw, she was 35 years old. She had been divorced once and had no children. She currently opened a delicatessen shop in partnership with her boyfriend and lives in the suburbs farthest from the ‘Goddess Lake’ in the city.

The reason why she lived there was not due to various problems such as low housing prices, but because she was afraid of water.

The ‘Goddess Lake’ was a place she never wanted to mention in her life.

Yao Mingfang sobbed: “In the summer when I was 11 years old, my aunt, older cousin, and younger cousin took me out to play at the Goddess Lake where we could swim…”

More than 20 years ago, most cities in Hunan Province had not been renovated or rebuilt.

At that time, rows of trees had not been planted along the shore of the “Goddess Lake”, and there were no iron fences or signs to remind people not to enter the water casually or go to deep water areas. The shore of the lake was still a road surface mixed with sand and mud.

Due to the hot weather, very few people could afford air conditioning in the 1990s. The favorite thing for locals to do in the summer was to take a dip in the Goddess Lake to cool down and save money.

Yao Mingfang was not very young at the time, but she was afraid of water. She learned to swim once when she was young but failed, so every time she went into the water she could only tread water in the shallowest area and did not dare to let the water cover her belly.

Or she would rent a swimming ring.

She clearly remembered that at that time, there were always a few uncles and aunts setting up stalls on the shore of the Goddess Lake. All the swimming rings were inflated and had the same style, four equal sections of blue, white, red, and yellow rubber put together.

The regular model cost 1.50 yuan an hour to rent, and the one with the Hello Kitty image printed on the rubber cost 2 yuan, which was not cheap at the time.

Many people think that swimming is just a matter of swinging your arms, and they can learn it after just two splashes, and there is no need to rent a swimming ring at all.

For this reason, 11-year-old Yao Mingfang was ridiculed by her cousins, who called her a landlubber and made a lot of noise by grabbing her swimming ring.

Yao Mingfang, who was sulking, swam far away by herself. At that time, her aunt and older cousin were busy teaching her little cousins, who also couldn’t swim, how to swim, so they had no time to care about her. They only told her a few words not to swim.

Because the swimming ring was hanging on, Yao Mingfang was not so scared, so she floated on her back in the water. When she came to her senses and realized something was wrong, the swimming ring under her body was already half deflated!

The rubber had a small hole somewhere, and the air leaked.

Yao Mingfang was terrified, but the more she struggled, the faster the swimming ring, which had begun to wither, leaked. She could only cry and scream.

But she had already drifted outside the deep water line. In the past, the deep water area where a few big swimmers would swim and swim was extremely deserted today, and her voice could not attract the lively people on the shore at all.

Just as Yao Mingfang was crying in despair, someone finally noticed something strange about her and swam in her direction.

It was a young girl in her early twenties. She also wore a rented swimming ring, but she didn’t put it on her body. Instead, she used her arms to hold the outside of the ring to swim in the water.

She swam to Yao Mingfang’s side, dragged Yao Fang’s body out of the soft swimming ring, put on her swimming ring, and panted:

‘Little girl, where are your family members? Why are you allowed to swim to such a deep place by yourself? This is too irresponsible, and the quality of this swimming ring is also bad. Don’t be afraid, nothing will happen. Let’s swim to the shore and I will take you to find the renter to discuss it!’

The young girl’s face was filled with anger.

She only learned how to swim this year and came to the Goddess Lake to practice swimming. To prevent herself from being exhausted and having bad posture, she rented a swimming ring and swam. From a distance, she saw a little girl waving in the deep water area, so she swam over to take a look.

So the two of them took the posture of one inside the swimming ring and the other holding it with one arm, preparing to swim towards the shallow water.

Yao Mingfang was frightened out of her wits. She finally regained her emotional stability. The body of the young woman holding the edge of the swimming ring suddenly sank.

She only had time to scream before the water went over her head, almost overturning the swimming ring.

It was like…like something was pulling at her under the water, dragging her down.

‘Save…’ The woman struggled continuously, and the only fulcrum was the edge of the swimming ring she was holding onto.

During the waving, her hand grabbed Yao Mingfang’s collar. The completely frightened little girl could only cry and howl, and forcefully pulled her hand away;

During the struggle, Yao Mingfang’s feet kicked the woman in the chest and abdomen several times, which made the situation of the woman who was already losing her physical strength even worse.

Soon the woman, who had too much water in her lungs, was unable to struggle.

Her fingers were spread tightly, and on her face, which was twisted in pain due to suffocation, a pair of bloodshot eyes stared at Yao Mingfang. She wished Yao Mingfang could grab her hand and pull her……

The change occurred suddenly and ended quickly.

Within two or three minutes, the water surface gradually returned to calm.

The woman completely disappeared.

Yao Mingfang remembered the last scene very clearly. The woman’s face was submerged in water, and countless bubbles rolled up from the bottom of the water, blurring the woman’s bloodshot eyes.

She was so frightened that she trembled all over and swam to the shore crying. Only then did her aunt’s family on the shore realize that her niece was missing and were looking for her anxiously. They saw her swimming back with her face covered in water and pale.

The aunt breathed a sigh of relief: ‘Where did you go, you damn girl? You scared us all to death!’

Yao Mingfang was sobbing and wanted to tell her aunt and family what had just happened, but she looked back at the calm lake, her eyes filled with horror.

She knew full well that the sister must have drowned.

She drowned to save her.

One thought on “Chapter 86: Hidden Hero (Part 1)

  1. Knowing that someone died to save you would be a very traumatizing event for anyone, especially if you saw it in person. I just feel bad for the young woman who tried to save Yang Mingfang and unfortunately died in her place.

    Thanks for the chapter! 😀
